Tess Lyons is a counsellor-in-training at Monash University with a strong foundation in empathetic listening, mentoring, and community support. She is passionate about creating safe, non-judgmental spaces where individuals can share their experiences and feel heard. Tess is particularly interested in supporting people navigating grief, life transitions, and emotional challenges, drawing on her extensive background in fundraising, mentoring, and volunteer leadership.

Her journey into counselling is rooted in years of service to diverse communities, including:

  • Griefshare – facilitating support groups for those navigating loss
  • Infertility Support Group – founding a fellowship for couples experiencing infertility
  • Empty Nesters Group – creating community for parents adjusting to life transitions
  • Parents of premature babies – offering encouragement and shared understanding
  • COVID/Quarantine support – providing emotional care and fostering connection during isolation

Trained to provide one-to-one care to those experiencing a difficult time in life, Tess has served for the past six years as a Stephen Minister and supervision leader. These roles have honed Tess’s ability to listen deeply, offer encouragement, and foster resilience. She has also mentored university students through the HKU Lead for Life programme, guiding them in character and leadership development.

Professionally, Tess has spent over a decade in donor relations, fundraising, and marketing for international charities and educational institutions, raising millions in support of community initiatives and building meaningful partnerships. These experiences sharpened her communication skills and ability to connect with people from diverse backgrounds—strengths she now channels into her counselling practice. She believes strongly in the power of empathy and community to bring healing and growth.
